Boys Over Flowers is my CrackFic

19 Mar

One anime, one K-drama, one fanfiction

So I was recently re-watching Ouran High School Host Club. It kept coming up as a recommendation on my Netflix account.  I kept avoiding it because it was so pink!  It looked like a romance story with flowers everywhere, also, high school was right in the name which wasn’t a big selling point, but it wouldn’t go away.  I noticed it on a couple lists of best Anime to Watch.  The most memorable description was from the website, The Mary Sue, which described it as disrupting the male gaze.  Curiosity got the better of me, and I’m glad it did!

It’s about a student who has to work for the host club to pay off a debt at an insanely rich academy.  It features familiar voice actors from Full Metal Alchemist and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen, animated or not.  My favorite parts were the fluidity in regards to sex and gender ideals as well as it being hilarious.  I couldn’t believe how funny it was, and when it was over, I wanted more.   A quick search online brought up Boys Before Flowers (BOF) as “similar”.  Except it wasn’t listed as a comedy but a romantic drama.  It’s not really my thing and all I could see they had in common were a poor student attends an insanely rich academy and all the misadventures.   But since I was looking for something to replace Ouran, I tried it out.

At first… ugh, where do I begin?

Unlike Haruhi from Ouran, the main character of BOF, Jan Di, annoyed me so much.  Her character reminded me so much of older aunties from Korean church.  The faces she made, her style of talking and yelling at a moment’s notice.  So although she was supposed to be a cute high schooler, I just kept imagining a sixty year old Emo (honorific for older woman who is like family) which is a weird way to start out for a female lead character.

The situations were over the top, like ridiculous.  She is inconsistent in her characterization and the amount of money is highly obscene.  The men were abusive and there were LITERALLY no teachers at the school AT ALL.  (Except for one American guy droning on about Cocteau to high schoolers who weren’t listening).  In a way, it was like Twilight in that sense.  I actually liked the first film, because in it’s cheesiness, it made fun of itself just enough to elevate it to funny and kind of endearing.  (the sequels that began to take themselves too seriously were my least favorites). This appealed to me on the same kind of level.   Suspend belief for it’s duration and just hold on for the ride.

As the episodes went on, the situations became even more ridiculous.  It’s par for any soap opera, I guess, kidnappings, drownings, high speed chases, blackmail and contracts… no evil twins I guess.   It keeps from being trashy though with innocent performances from everyone involved.  They hold back so much that you can’t help rooting for them all.  JanDi’s acting evened out and her character seemed more at ease in scenes and the time was spent fleshing out main characters a bit more.  Secondary characters disappear without a trace.

And the next thing I knew, I was utterly obsessed with the show.

As it went on, I reminded me more and more of a AU Twilight fanfiction that I had also managed to fall in love with, years ago.  (picture will link to story on

Welcome to Tha Dogg Pound!

Both involve incredibly rich, good looking guys, especially the two male leads, one an arrogant prick and the other one, impossibly cool.

Of course, the story has loads of sex, drinking, drugs and swearing.  Trust me, it’s still worthy of your adoration.   If you’re into a poor girl infiltrating a super rich academy and schooling her fellow students.

In both, the characters, no matter how much back story, are still mainly tropes.  And the reason, I compared BOF to crack fic is that nothing can ever just be normal.  Something is always happening, just when there is a breather.  The most normal thing to happen is everyone sitting around in lavish surroundings and impossibly beautiful clothes discussing the crazy events that just happened, or were currently happening or about to happen.  Then again, if you’re looking to ogle some pretty good looking people, and lots and lots of pretty pictures of food (I love how we Asians love our food!!) watch it.

Yo, Yo, Yo, my bro.

I also wanted to throw out, that the one male who doesn’t lie to himself is part of the Mafia and likes to used American Gangster Speak.  That alone is worth the show, I think.  The equivalent in Scotch, Gin and the New Girl is a guy who says his life is like a 90’s rap song.  Also worth it.

P.S.  There are some American fans in the midst of creating their own version of Boys Over Flowers called Boys Before Friends.  To watch their first episode click here.

Wuthering Heights

18 Jun

I finally got around to seeing the 2011 version of Wuthering Heights.

Yes, I know I’m behind.  Anyone following the Twitter feed can see that all I watch are old movies.

This movie was darker than any other version I had seen, but it kind of made sense.  While I am not sure if I liked the film, I can say I was struck by it.  It immediately made me want to go back and read the book.

I first read Wuthering Heights in high school.  I’m not sure why, but I distinctly remember thinking I was going in for a gothic romantic supernatural love story.

While I guess it was a story about two people in love with each other, it was also a story about two people who were also incredibly mean to each other.  They hurt each other time and again and it didn’t matter if they could justify their actions.

how misleading is this cover?!

They were selfish and destructive and yet could not tear themselves away from each other.  Even when they tried, it made it worse for those around them and themselves.

While I’m guessing I have a soft spot for this type of story since a mutually assured destructive love story was also the basis for “Jeux D’enfant (Love Me If You Dare), one of the first things I’d seen with Marianne Cotillard.

Differences, yes.  But sometimes, despite love, people can bring out the worse in each other.  Both explore the darker side of being together and how trying to move on with a “normal” relationship does not work for them.  It is too boring, too common, too tame, too civilized.

My favorite part of the novel is the second half, the half generally ignored in movies.  I always felt this part brought everything back around full circle.  There was hope and redemption in the second half, while the first part ends so hopelessly.

Healthcliff begs Cathy to haunt him.

In this version, I did think that the children actors, Shannon Beers and Solomon Glave were very good.

These two were amazing.

I felt that the intensity was lost slightly when they were adults.   I can not tell if this makes the abuse more horrifying or less since the attitude is so cavalier, but it does not feel as though they are compelled by their obsession.

As children, Healthcliff is horrifically abused; emotionally, mentally and physically, no matter how he tries to be accepted.   He spends much of his time with Cathy, who defines the relationship between them.  When he grows older and she leaves, he doesn’t know what to do without her.  Of course, as is often the case, he becomes abusive as he is now able to assert some power where he has been previously powerless.  Oh, there a lot of themes in this novel but (courtly) love is not one of them.

So while I have read reviews where people outright hated the 2011 version, I personally felt that it captured the destructive nature of the novel.  Also, how could people not feel bad towards Heathcliff?  It almost seems obvious that he is so mean as an adult after all he had to deal with when younger.  (though there is one scene that creeped me out  a bit)

I’m also glad that the age is where it should be.  Doesn’t it make more sense that their love is so intense if they are younger in age?  It’s a driving theme behind Romeo and Juliet.  Has society changed the connotations of  this novel by using older actors?

Also, as a matter of comparison, when Cathy (in the 2011 movie) is licking his wounds and sucking on her scratches, I was reminded of “The Thirteenth Tale” by Diane Setterfield.

I will not give out spoilers, but just know there is a tale of two lovers that seems very similar to the 2011 movie version of Wuthering Heights.

Let’s see how much is kept in for the BBC movie adaptation that will be out in Christmas of 2013.  It will star Vanessa Redgrave and Sansa Stark.

Okay, this just needs to be thrown out there.

WTF Brad Paisley and YOU LL Cool J???

EVEN LYNYRD SKYNYRD knew to distance themselves from the flag and they give some very good reasons why.  But people hate change.

Aside from if whether you think it’s “heritage not hate”

as someone with family on both sides of the line and from OTHER COUNTRIES, it shows AT THE VERY LEAST anti-American sentiment.  Remember that time the Confederacy wanted to secede?

Oh yea…. so you want to argue about slavery and racism, well with other races contributing to this site, I can’t say I agree with you.   But I don’t want to have that circular argument anyway, and I guess we can agree to disagree.

But even if you feel that it’s a heritage problem and not a racial religion history problem, then do some research and realize that the flag you hold so dear wanted to be it’s own country.  It wanted to leave America.

So….. waving it proudly means you are proud of belonging to people who hated this country so much they attempted to leave it.  It’s a slap in the face.

And people probably wouldn’t get so pissy if teenagers didn’t feel like they had to fight for an integrated prom because the parents don’t want one and the school outright washes it hands about the whole thing (click on link for story)

Georgia Teens Fight for Racially Integrated Prom Because It’s 2013, for Chrissakes

OMG:  This is an added edit…

WHY WHY WHY is there a separate Confederate Memorial Day?

Why is that a thing???????!!!!!

What was wrong with REGULAR U. S. Memorial day… a day to honor U.S. Soldiers?

See, this is the stuff I was pointing out above.   Don’t wave that flag in front of me and tell me you love being an American.  I understand the press release SAYS that it’s to remind people that we UNIFIED….

by honoring the fallen confederate soldiers separately.

This isn’t Civil War Memorial day or even “The War Between the States” Memorial Day…

Wait here is a link from the Georgia Senate:

Sen. Heath Issues Statement to Commemorate Confederate Memorial Day

Sen. Bill Heath (R-Bremen) has released the following statement on the commemoration of Confederate Memorial Day in Georgia:

“On Monday, April 22, many Georgians across the State will pay respect to the countless soldiers who gave their lives to defend the confederacy. It is important to remember the historical significance of our nation’s fractured past.

The “War Between the States” was unlike any conflict in our nation’s history; brothers took up arms against each other and it was not uncommon for young boys to join in the war effort. As war raged across the early American countryside, both the Confederate and Union Army fought to preserve their unique heritage and uphold the values that shaped their identity.

The Civil War ended nearly 150 years ago, but continues to stand as a resolute reminder of how a nation divided by war was unified despite our differences. There is no greater reminder of our nation’s reconciliation than when our country is faced with times of adversity. When tragedy most recently struck the heart of Boston, our nation did not cower and hide, but showed resiliency and solidarity in the midst of pain. When times of trial come – and they will – we must always remember that we are stronger together than apart.

Honoring the fallen during Confederate Memorial Day is a reminder of our country’s unique ability to rise from the ashes and reconcile a war-torn past. If we don’t understand the battles of the past, we’ll be destined to repeat them.”

To the man that waited on me at the Starbucks down on Main, I hope you understand
When I put on that t-shirt, the only thing I meant to say is I’m a Skynyrd fan
The red flag on my chest somehow is like the elephant in the corner of the south
And I just walked him right in the room
Just a proud rebel son with an ‘ol can of worms
Lookin’ like I got a lot to learn but from my point of view

I’m just a white man comin’ to you from the southland
Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
We’re still pickin’ up the pieces, walkin’ on eggshells, fightin’ over yesterday
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

Being Scared as An Adult

11 Mar

Okay, So I made the mistake of rewatching the Marble Hornets YouTube page recently.  (Did you know they will be making a movie?)  Plus there is a new SlenderMan game coming out….

I’m okay, I am a grown ass adult so it doesn’t bother me.

So here I am, putting away clothing and I hear a noise from the other room.  A really loud, really strange noise.

It’s a Furby going off.

Yes, it is ours but WHY IN GOD’S NAME did it start going off when no one else is in the house but me?? and it’s sitting on a counter, I know they’ll go off is someone moves them.  There is no TV in other room, it was just me, my dog, 30Rock reruns and then that thing…

So I can’t see out the door to the other room, from where I am, and there was NO WAY IN HELL I was poking my head out there.

Eventually, it announced “I’m Sleepy” and shut off.

Then my house phone immediately began to ring.

No one has that number.  No really.  Just two families, but instead it’s from a number I don’t recognize.  (319-535-2429) Which a quick internet search assures me is a scammer. I didn’t answer anyway.  All I had were of visions of a voice saying.. “Seven days….” So NO THANK YOU!

The TV starts buzzing periodically (it’s still on mute).

and now my dog won’t stop staring at the doorway, listening for… I don’t know what.

I don’t think I’m leaving my room for a while.

Plus I feel like  a moron because I’m an adult and I’m scared shitless at the moment.

Stupid, scary robotic animal toys, horror films, the internet and most importantly, my brain… UGH

.. my dog put her head down, but now my ipod’s alarm is ringing with an old timey phone ringer… stupid… now i have to go out there to turn it off

i forgot i had somewhere to be

Big Juicy Red Lips … should we?

13 Feb

Vampires only think with their FANGS

So….. when we met…. we were fans of red lips.  This may have helped the bonding experience… well that and our love of fantasy  (and obviously…. hot vampire boyfriends that WILL NOT kill us when they make out with us)

And while it’s fallen out of favor for us (except for dress up and special occasions)  in the past few years but…. sometimes we miss it

we went back and forth with it… all the things we loved… all the things we didn’t

I mean…. we can use a billion examples of people on TV/Movies/Media that wear it beautifully…. but most of these people have a team of people to help them

For every this:

pretty hair red lips

there are plenty more of this

and never mind the color sliding off your entire lip, except for the lining…

then you look like this all day:

click on the link for a red lip tutorial inspired by Sherlock’s Irene Adler

or if you forgo liner altogether and then get the bleeding… ugh

click to find more articles on red lipstick

this of course can  be controlled with a good primer as well as lip liner.  Even so, I obsessively check it when I get the chance.

Then there is choosing the wrong color…. sometimes the lights in the house REALLY make a difference!!

not everyone could pull this off!

Pinned Image

dark red lips

here’s a handy guide though:

and never mind that some reds will make your teeth look yellow!

Who Wants THAT?!!

Since this is something that embaresses most people, I will refrain from using a picture of an actual person that might be recognized:

I mean, maybe it doesn’t make it look MORE yellow, but just draws attention to the yellow already there?  I’m not sure, but it is something worrisome.

On the other hand, I have met some peole so crazy about bleaching their teeth that they turn blue.

of course I can’t find a good picture as everyone wants white teeth, but trust me.. in real life it’s freaky looking

But with does it make us feel glamorous?  Absolutely!!

Marilyn Monroe

Does it make us feel confident?  You better believe it!

Pinned Image

Does it make us feel sexy?… Mmmm Hmmmm

Pinned Image

It’s all kinds of things… It’s classic and pretty and bold at the same time.

And while it may not be for everyday wear… though some cane pull it off that way, it’s definitely something every girl should try.

And with Valentine’s Day right around the corner…. why not start there?

Wreck It Ralph is Crushing It

19 Nov

So I went to see Wreck It Ralph with a mixed bag of people this weekend.

and… Great Green Yoda Ghost……

It was AWESOME!!!

There were so many reasons to like this movie.  First there were nods to many games over the years, even the background characters were all exciting to glimpse.

how many of these guys do i know??

The games created for the movie were done really well.  They were all familiar in a way you really felt that Hero’s Duty *giggle* (not THAT kind of duty!) could be a real game.  The characters, behavior, graphics, music were all spot on.  All of the in movie games were that way.  Fix It Felix Jr had residents that looked like weebles and had jerky movements in that retro 8bit gameplay kind of way.  Sugar Rush had an entire world that … well, one made me want candy, but the music and graphics were just…. I mean, I could see that as a racing game in an arcade.  It’s like CandyLand, Strawberry Shortcake and crack all got together, and I really mean this in the best way possible.

Plus, the voice actors were great.

Jack McBrayer from 30Rock (the show with all the Star Wars reference)

John C Reilly (from everything…. Wiki him if you don’t believe me)

Jane Lynch from Glee, A Might Wind, Sam’s mom from iCarly… a ton more shit

Sarah Silverman, you know, Fry’s girlfriend from Futurama…. wait… someone just told me she had a show?

and seriously, I didn’t realize this til the credits but… Wash?

Is this guy:

And the Contra nod…

these graphics are TIGHT son!

well I ended up saying it OUT LOUD in the theater and no one near me new what I was fangirling about.

I almost had an Iron Giant moment (please see the post about bawling my freaking eyes out)

But thankfully, did not have a ridiculous moment crying my eyes out over a cartoon…. because that doesn’t happen!!!

But, seriously, go see this movie.  I had someone say… oh.. you picked this over Breaking Dawn?

(not a fake background)

I will admit, I wasn’t sure what to think.  I haven’t been too keen on Disney’s stuff as of late.  The Pixar stuff is, of course, love.  But the animated movies themselves… Wreck it Ralph made me excited again.  Yes, they took some cues from Pixar.  There is an animated short at the beginning that had no words and yet not one kid in that theater said ANYTHING when it was on.

To that I say, THANK YOU to Disney.  For bringing back wonder and quality.

and even if it seems a little familiar:

familiar things can bring comfort too.

like this picture… see how familiar they are….. Yikes… maybe not

(Oh, and for all you haters about… do kids even hang out at arcades anymore??  I was ALSO at an arcade this weekend that had tons of kids there doling out their quarters.  so :P)
